10 Must-Do Fall Day Trips

Aug 16, 2024

Saying goodbye to summer is always tough, but the crisp air and vibrant colors of fall never fail to lift my spirits. Fall weekends seem to fly by, and before you know it, winter’s knocking at the door. So, grab your calendar and start planning some fun day trips in the area before the cold sets in.

Here are my top ten recommendations for fall day trips you and your family will love:

Blowing Rock

Blowing Rock is my go-to spot for fall. The foliage is incredible, and it feels like everyone’s out enjoying the beauty. From gem mining, hiking at Hebron Rock Colony, cruising along the Parkway, attending festivals, visiting Tweetsie Railroad, or shopping at the outlets, there’s something for everyone.

Zaloo’s Canoes

If you’ve never gone river tubing, Zaloo’s is the perfect place to start. Located in Wilkesboro, NC, they offer tubing trips on weekends through mid-October. It’s all about kicking back and relaxing (which may be a challenge with little ones!). You can choose a two-to-three-hour or four-to-five-hour trip. For us, the shorter trip is just right. Check out their website and give them a call to plan your adventure on the New River.

The Lazy 5 Ranch

This spot is fun all year round, but I prefer visiting when it’s cooler. Kids will love feeding the animals and taking a wagon ride. Located in Mooresville, NC, Lazy 5 Ranch is an interactive experience your family will enjoy. Get more info here.

Hill Ridge Farms

Another favorite throughout the year, Hill Ridge Farms really shines in the fall. With a pumpkin patch, gem mining, hay maze, train rides, and more, it’s a great family outing. Located in Youngsville, NC, it’s about a 1.5 to 2-hour drive from most Triad locations. Discover more about this hidden gem here.

Asheville

Voted the “quirkiest town in the US” by Travel & Leisure, Asheville is a must-see! While you could do a day trip, I’d recommend staying for the weekend. The Biltmore Estate is the main attraction, and if you have time, don’t miss the Butler’s Tour. For tips on downtown hotspots, restaurants, and the arts district, check out our blog here.

Reynolda Museum and Gardens

Located in Winston-Salem, Reynolda is a local treasure. While the gardens are most vibrant in the spring, fall is the perfect time for a picnic, a visit to the farmer’s market, and a walk along the trails. Don’t forget to explore the shops and restaurants in Reynolda Village. Learn more and plan your visit here.

Hanging Rock

We make a point to visit Hanging Rock at least once a year. It’s perfect in the summer for swimming, but the cooler fall weather is ideal for hiking. There are trails for every skill level, from easy waterfall hikes to the more challenging climb up to Hanging Rock. Just keep in mind the uphill trek may be tough for little ones. Find more tips here.

Stone Mountain State Park

Not to be confused with Georgia’s Stone Mountain, this North Carolina park in Roaring Gap is a peaceful place to hike, camp, and connect with nature. The 600-foot granite dome offers breathtaking views. You can also fish and rock climb here. It’s one of my favorite spots for tent camping, with RV options available too. Get more details here.

Chimney Rock State Park

I can’t get enough of Chimney Rock, near Lake Lure. The park is fantastic, with plenty of hiking trails, rock climbing, waterfalls, and a nearby restaurant. Plus, you’ll find great shopping along the way. Plan your trip with more details here.

Boone

I might be a little biased since I went to Appalachian State, but Boone’s mountain scenery is unbeatable. If you’re planning a weekend, you can visit Blowing Rock and spend a day in Boone. We love touring the ASU campus, shopping at Mast General Store, and grabbing lunch at Boone Bagelry or Macado’s. Be sure to take in the view from Howard Knob, and don’t miss nearby Mystery Hill. Check out our recent trip to Boone here.

There you have it! Honestly, I could’ve listed 20 spots because North Carolina is absolutely stunning in the fall. Share your favorite fall destinations with us below!!
