Rhaenyra Gains New Dragonriders: What’s Next for House of the Dragon?
Rhaenyra Targaryen’s dragon army is getting stronger with the addition of new dragonriders Ulf the White and Hugh Hammer. But what’s in store for her other dragons?
In the latest episode of House of the Dragon, Rhaenyra has successfully added Ulf the White and Hugh Hammer to her ranks, joining the already established Addam of Hull. This boost comes after a pressing need for more dragonriders, especially following the catastrophic Battle of Rook’s Rest.
Earlier this season, Rhaenyra struggled with a lack of dragonriders. She had her dragon Syrax, Daemon’s Caraxes, and other dragons like Jacaerys’ Vermox and Baela’s Moondancer, but her sons’ dragons still needed time to grow. Meanwhile, the threat from Team Green, especially Aemond’s massive Vhagar, loomed large.
In Episode 6, Rhaenyra discovers Addam, a lowborn rider, on Seasmoke, Laenor Velaryon’s old dragon. Addam’s unexpected skill is traced back to his Targaryen heritage, which catches Rhaenyra’s interest. She then brings in other Targaryen bastards to ride her remaining dragons, Silverwing and Vermithor, despite some internal concerns from Jacaerys, who worries these new riders might challenge his own claim to the throne.
Hugh Hammer, introduced as a blacksmith wronged by King Aegon II, enters the scene after his Targaryen roots come to light. Although he initially faces resistance while trying to claim Vermithor, the second-largest dragon in Westeros, his bravery wins Vermithor’s favour and secures his spot as a rider.
Looking ahead, there’s speculation that more wild dragons might join Rhaenyra’s side. Characters like Rhaena and the elusive Grey Ghost or Cannibal could become key players in this unfolding dragon saga.
